SmartBanking for Business

As part of Apple’s Mobility Partner Program (MPP), CIBC partnered with Apple to design and develop the SmartBanking for Business iOS app, tailored for tablets and aimed at small and medium-sized businesses. The app integrated data from cloud accounting providers like Intuit and Xero, giving business owners a comprehensive view of their finances and simplifying business management.

The Process

I worked closely with the client and requirements team to transform data from existing accounting software into clear, visually appealing graphics for users. Using an iterative design approach, we explored various concepts and color themes, emphasizing CIBC's secondary palette for data visualizations. Regular touchpoints with Apple’s design team in Cupertino ensured adherence to iOS design standards and optimized the user experience. Their feedback guided informed decisions, resulting in a high-quality app aligned with Apple's ecosystem.

SmartBanking for Business Dashboard Concepts.

Key Features

The Dashboard

The main feature of the app was the comprehensive dashboard, designed to give business owners a holistic view of their company's finances. This included information on pending invoices, receivables, and day-to-day banking activities, empowering business owners with valuable insights into their cash flow. The dashboard integrated third-party data seamlessly, providing a single, informative view that facilitated timely financial decisions for business owners.

Key Features

Accounts Page

Within the app, the accounts tab offered users real-time access to their business accounts' balances and transactions. Users could easily select the desired account from the left panel, enabling the right panel to display the corresponding transactions and balances. Additionally, an alternative "data" view was available, presenting a visual representation of the user's account balances over the past 45 days, offering a graphical depiction of their financial trends and patterns.

Key Features

Invoices

The invoices tab within the app provided users with a concise overview of their accounts receivable and accounts payable. Utilizing a tab bar, users had the flexibility to view either category separately or together for a comprehensive picture. Furthermore, a graphical view was implemented, offering users a swift and visual understanding of their outgoing and incoming cash flow, as well as their net balance over the course of the past year. This feature enabled users to gain valuable insights into their financial trends and make informed decisions accordingly.

Visual Design

Style Guide

To ensure consistency in design, a comprehensive style guide was created specifically for the custom features that deviated from the iOS guidelines. This document served as a reference for future designs, ensuring that they would align with the established patterns. The client utilized this style guide as they progressed with the development and testing of a beta version of the app, providing a valuable resource to maintain visual coherence and a unified user experience.
